The Erasmus Mundus “EMSHIP” master is organised in 3 semesters, in 18 months, and contains 90 Credits (50+10 + 10 + 20):

- 50 credits (25 + 25) of advanced lectures (first year)
- 10 credits of Initiation to research (first year),
- 10 credits – of advanced specialized lectures (2 months the second year),
- 20 credits – Master thesis and internship (4 months the second year).

FIRST SEMESTER – 15th September to 30th January, in Liège, Belgium

In February, a full week of seminars and meetings with the six consortium university partners and their representatives (presentation of the institutions and their facilities, proposals of final projects by the consortium universities, selection of candidates, selection of projects, …) are  organised. The associated and industrial partners participates by giving specific presentations. Candidates from the 1st year (starting S2) will attend the Master Thesis presentation of the candidates of the second year (finishing S3)

• ECN and ULiège

15th May to 30th June (in Nantes)

10 Credits: Initiation to research, Preparation to the Final Project and Technical Visits, including:

- Initiation to research (methodology),

- Preparation to the Final Master Project: Methodology, objectives, assessment and evaluation, bibliography research methodology, initiation of the state of art for the projects, …. Presentation of their proposal of final master project including detailed plan, project content, planning and objectives.

- Technical visits of shipyards and experimental facilities (towing tanks, structural labs, …).

These program and visits will be organised by ECN (Nantes) with the active support of ULiège staff and professors.

THIRD SEMESTER - July to February (8 months), in Romania, Italy, France, Germany or Poland (candidates will be assigned equally to the 5 countries)

(There is a special rule for students who have obtained their last degree in Belgium or France cannot spend their 3rd mobility at ICAM (France) in order to respect the rule that states that these students must visit at least two other countries during their studies.)

• The “Master Thesis”, “Internship” and “Advanced Specialized Lectures in Ship Design”, in one of the four other universities (UGAL, UNIGE, URO or ZUT):

10 Credits of Advanced and Specialized lectures:

20 Credits- Master Thesis and Internship (Final project):

The thesis and Internship are performed under the supervision of the university where the candidate also follows the 10 credits of advanced lectures (see above), in collaboration with a company from the maritime industry, e.g. a shipyard or an associated research institution; in any case under the supervision of this local university and the Master Management Committee.

Graduation Ceremony (late February):

For practical reasons, the presentation of the Master Thesis and graduation ceremony (combined with the candidates of the next enrolment period) will be held in one of the universities .

The planning of the lectures, visit, projects and evaluation is presented in the following tables. These tables must be considered as a tentative planning of the EMSHIP master course. They show how the various lectures, from 3 different institutions, are carefully integrated to form a coherent 90 credits master course programme.

Figure 3 gives an overview of the programme including the mobility scheme and shows how succeeding cohorts will be given an opportunity for intense communication in the EMSHIP EMMC week.
