Naval Composite structure dimensioning

Prof. Hervé Le Sourne, Dr. Ing. Philippe Blot

Code = EMSHIP S3-9 (Semester S3)

Workload: 30h lectures, 30h exercises

Number of credits: 4

Objectives

The objective is to give relevant knowledge and capability to use advanced methods and procedures for dimensioning naval composite structures.

Contents

Composite structure static dimensioning (20h lecture):

-          Elastic behaviour of an orthotropic composite material

-          Homogenisation rules for laminate composites used in naval shipbuilding

-          Mechanical behaviour of laminates (theory of beam and plate bending)

-          Use of finite element software Nastran/Patran to analyse a composite structure

Simulation and testing of impacts on composites structures (10h lecture):

-          Introduction to shock analysis

-          Damage of composite structures submitted to low velocity impacts

(Physics, Composite strength after impact, Impact modelling, Damage criteria)

-          Methods used to model low velocity impacts on metallic and composite structures

-          Modelling ship damage after collision or slamming impacts

Naval composite structure dimensioning (project: 30h)

-          Use of analytical and/or numerical tools to dimension a pre-defined composite part for naval or wind turbines application
